Warhol and Claes Oldenburg—the great pop
artists—did. We still have a terrible gap. We have a
terrible gap where some—rock and roll, to me one
of the great art forms of the end of the century,
still has never gained the respect that is deserves
from critics. There are people who are rock fans,
and have written serious books about it, but
people who are untouched by rock music have
absolutely no respect for it. There’s a lot of work
to do here at the end of the century following in
